Monrovia, Liberia — The Chief Executive Officer of Serving Humanity, Empowerment and Development (SHED), Madam Joyce Queeglay Payibo, has commended the Ministry of Agriculture for its sustained efforts in empowering farmers across Liberia.
Madam Payibo made the remarks at the end of the National Agriculture Fair while speaking to members of the media. She described the agriculture fair as a vital platform that promotes farmers, showcases local produce, and encourages national food security.
Highlighting SHED’s interventions, Madam Payibo disclosed that the organization operates in five prisons across five counties, including Margibi, Grand Cape Mount, Nimba, and Bong. She explained that SHED supports inmates in pre-trial detention by providing legal assistance through the engagement of lawyers and also supports judges who conduct fast-track court sessions within the prison facilities.
According to her, SHED also provides recreational facilities such as televisions and books for inmates, while working closely with community and religious leaders to resolve minor cases that can help decongest prisons.
Madam Payibo further emphasized that SHED collaborates strongly with the Government of Liberia, particularly the Ministry of Justice. She noted that the ministry grants SHED authorization to operate within prisons and jointly plans budgets to support prison-related programs.
Speaking on agriculture and nutrition, the SHED CEO urged Liberians to diversify their diets by consuming locally produced crops instead of relying solely on rice. She stressed that embracing other food crops will improve nutrition and strengthen local farmers.
Madam Payibo also lauded the European Union Delegation to Liberia for its continued support to SHED’s programs, describing the partnership as critical to the success of the organization’s humanitarian and development initiatives.
