MONROVIA — The Minister of Mines and Energy, R. Matenokay Tingban, has laid the first brick, marking the start of construction works for the office building of the Liberia Geological Survey, following the groundbreaking ceremony held on November 28, 2025.
The symbolic brick-laying ceremony took place on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at the main office compound of the Mines and Energy Ministry. Minister Tingban was accompanied by members of his senior management team comprising Deputy and Assistant Ministers, including technicians from the Ministry (MME), and the Contractor. In brief remarks before performing the symbolic laying of the brick, the Mines and Energy Minister commended the Contractor for living up to the start date of the project which is expected to run for a 12-month period.
The Minister expressed hope that this timeline can be achieved in order to relocate the Liberia Geological Survey (LGS) from its current Old Road community office, to the head-office of the Ministry in central Monrovia. In 2025, the Ministry assumed ownership of the current LGS office building on the Old Road by completing payment for purchase of the facility which the administration of the Mines and Energy Ministry intends to transform into a modern mineral analytical laboratory.
The Liberia Geological Survey (LGS) was established in the early 2000s to address the need for systematic geological research and resource management to revitalize Liberia’s mineral exploration sector and ensure sustainable development.
Key functions of the Liberia Geological Survey include Geological Research and Mapping, Data Collection and Analysis, Collaboration with International organizations, Publications and Resource Dissemination, Advisory and other important roles as an integral technical arm of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
