BUCHANAN – Leaders from dozens of registered political parties have called for sweeping amendments to Liberia’s New Elections Law during a high-level consultation in Grand Bassa County.
The proposals, aimed at enhancing transparency and fairness ahead of the 2029 General Elections, highlight several critical areas for reform including ending the practice of sitting lawmakers contesting by-elections without first resigning their seats, addressing overcrowded polling precincts and reviewing the standard voting period and strengthening affirmative action provisions to ensure broader representation.
National Reform Momentum
The Buchanan consultation is part of a nationwide effort launched by the National Elections Commission (NEC) in November 2025. Supported by the UNDP Liberia Electoral Support Project, the initiative seeks to gather public and political consensus on modernizing the electoral framework.
NEC Commissioners, including Co-Chairperson Cllr. P. Teplah Reeves, presided over the session. The NEC’s Legal Section is now tasked with compiling these recommendations into a formal bill for legislative action.
