MONROVIA, Liberia — The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has issued a stern warning to the Unity Party (UP)-led government, vowing to resist any attempt to appoint a partisan or member of the ruling party as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC).
Speaking on Freedom FM on March 26, 2026, CDC National Chairman Atty. Janga Augustus Kowo addressed rumors circulating across Liberia that President Boakai is contemplating appointing a loyalist to head the electoral body.
“We expect a non-partisan NEC chairperson,” Kowo stated firmly. “Davidetta Brown-Lansanah is not a member of the CDC and has never affiliated with the CDC.The elections battle starts now, we are not going to wait because 2029 is at the end of the road.”
Kowo argued that the previous CDC administration maintained a non-political electoral board and insisted the current government is legally obligated to do the same.
“Partisans cannot and should not be appointed to the NEC—that is the law,” Kowo asserted. “We will use every legal means to ensure that the NEC Chairperson is not a partisan of the UP.”
The Chairman’s remarks come ahead of the imminent departure of NEC Chairperson Davidetta Brown-Lansanah, who resigned earlier this month. Although she has tendered her resignation, President Boakai requested that she remain in her post through the end of March to allow the government sufficient time to vet a successor.
