Monrovia , Liberia: – Liberia’s main opposition political party, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has issued a scathing condemnation of President Joseph Boakai, accusing his administration of abandoning democratic norms and steering country toward a “dictatorial path.”
In a statement released Friday, April 17 2026, the CDC targeted the alleged attempt to remove Hon. Yekeh Kolubah of Montserrado County District #10 from the 55th Legislature. The CDC alleged that the Boakai-Koung administration orchestrated a bribery scheme, reportedly distributing $25,000 USD to individual lawmakers—totaling an alleged $1.2 million USD in taxpayer funds—to secure the expulsion.
According to the CDC, the Executive is a “revolutionary deceit” and President Boakai has ignored Supreme Court orders to halt proceedings against Kolubah. The party further alleged a rise in human rights abuses under Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman, citing recent “excessive force” used against peaceful student protesters during the April 14, 2026 March for Jobs and Justice in Monrovia.
“A government that repeatedly disregards the Supreme Court’s orders risks undermining democratic norms and encouraging violence,” the statement read, contrasting the current climate with the tenure of former President George Weah.
The CDC in a swift disciplinary move, has announced the immediate expulsion of seven of its own lawmakers who allegedly signed the resolution to remove Kolubah. The party stated these individuals betrayed the CDC’s principles by participating in the “illegal” ousting.
The expelled lawmakers are:
Ivar K. Jones (Margibi, Dist. 2)
Julie Fatorma Wiah (Lofa, Dist. 2)
Momo Siafa Kpoto (Lofa, Dist. 3)
Alexander Poure (River Gee, Dist. 1)
Choloplay Isaac Wuo (River Gee, Dist. 2)
Johnson S.N. Williams (River Gee, Dist. 3)
P. Mike Jury (Maryland, Dist. 1)
A Call for International Intervention
The CDC is calling on the international community to intervene, warning that the “catastrophic risk” of silence could lead to national instability. They urged the government to pivot its focus away from political vendettas and toward Liberia’s “collapsed economy,” rising unemployment, and the drug epidemic.
The party demands the immediate restoration of Hon. Kolubah’s seat, vowing to support legal action against state security heads for the alleged brutalization of civilians.
