Tokyo, Japan – Agriculture Minister, Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah on the sidelines of TICAD9, represented Liberia at the TICAD9 Side Event, co-hosted by the Government of Japan and the World Food Programme (WFP) under the theme โCultivating the Future Through a Co-Creative Partnership: The Challenges of WFP and MAFF Toward Resilient Food Systems in West Africa.โ
During Minister Nuetah’s presentation he reflected on the impact of the 27 years JapanโWorld Food Program (WFP) partnership in Liberia, which has strengthened smallholder farmers, doubled rice yields in Bong County, and supported the expansion of the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme.
Dr. Nuetah said Japan and WFP’s interventions have not only improved food security, but have also provided structured markets for farmers, especially women, and have contributed to the resilience of rural communities.
He reaffirmed Liberiaโs commitment to advancing sustainable food systems, empowering smallholder farmers, and scaling up school feeding as a critical investment in both nutrition and rural development.
Minister Nuetah said Government stands ready to deepen cooperation with Japan, WFP and all partners in building a more resilient and inclusive agricultural future.
He reiterated Liberiaโs strong commitment to working hand-in-hand with WFP to ensure sustainable market opportunities for farmers and nutritious meals for children.
“We remain committed to working with Japan to scale up sustainable investments in Liberiaโs agriculture sector,” Minister Nuetah noted.
Meanwhile, at TICAD9, Dr. Nuetah met with the Parliamentary Vice Minister of the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) leading to a commitment on strengthening Liberiaโs rice production and food systems, expanding inclusive value chains, and empowering smallholder farmers through innovation and technology.
He also met with WFP Executive Director, Ms. Cindy McCain and had fruitful discussions on Liberiaโs priorities in strengthening food systems, scaling the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, and enhancing support for smallholder farmers.
