Monrovia – Liberia’s largest opposition political party the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has strongly condemned the recent fire incident at the 9th Street residence of its Political Leader and former President of the Republic of Liberia, George Manneh Weah.
In a statement issued in Monrovia today, CDC National Chairman Atty. Augustus Janga Kowo said the party (CDC) regards the unfortunate incident as a premeditated attack on the life of the former President, warning that such is “intended to undermine his safety and destabilize the peace of our nation.”
The CDC alleged of one instance during one of Weah’s returns to Liberia, where, according to them, the Roberts International Airport (RIA) became a scene of violence when personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) attacked CDC partisans and supporters who had assembled to receive him.
The CDC Chairman highlighted the former President’s recent return to the country, which saw the huge presence of armed police officers stationed at the airport, where several CDC partisans and supporters were denied entry to the main airport, with police authorities citing safety of other traveling passengers thereby allowing the situation to escalate.
The situation, according to Kowo saw police “brutally manhandled, placed in handcuffs, and in some instances, jailed some CDC partisans.”
The CDC sees such acts by the police as an act of “intimidation unbecoming of a democratic society.”
“In addition, the Unity Party (UP) zealots have engaged in a campaign of disinformation and misinformation, including the circulation of a fake, AI-generated image purporting to depict the bedroom of former President Weah. Such acts are not only deceptive but are also calculated attempts to mislead the public and tarnish the image of our Political Leader”, a statement from the CDC said.
The CDC further clarified that it’s political leader, former President George Manneh Weah is safe, well, and in good health, but however, “called for a forensic, international, and independent investigation into this incident; one that is void of lies, deception, and fakery to ensure that the truth is revealed and justice is served.”
The CDC mentioned that it remains committed to safeguarding the peace, unity, and democracy of Liberia.
“We caution against reckless actions and urge all actors to respect the sanctity of human life, democratic principles, and the rule of law,” the CDC stated.
