Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberian sporting community is mourning the loss of a devoted figure, veteran medic James Beyan Sumo, who was laid to rest following a well-attended homegoing service in Monrovia.
Mr. Sumo, affectionately known as ‘IE Sumo’ due to his long association with the famous club, was interred at the Johnsonville Cemetery outside the capital. His passing has sent a wave of sadness across Liberia’s football landscape.
A Dedication Spanning Decades
For over twenty years, Mr. Sumo was an indispensable presence on the sidelines, dedicating his professional medical skills to the welfare of Liberian athletes.
He served the nation proudly with the Liberia National Team (Lone Star).
He was also a key fixture for the legendary Invincible Eleven (IE) Football Club.
His period of service, notably the late 1990s and early 2000s, saw him directly impact the lives and careers of hundreds of footballers.
Final Battle with Illness
The veteran medic had been struggling with a severe, prolonged leg injury. Although he underwent surgery in a bid to restore his mobility and quality of life, he tragically succumbed to the resulting sickness on October 14, 2025 at the SDA Cooper Hospital in Sinkor.
The outpouring of grief from family members, friends, and former players highlights the deep and lasting impact of ‘IE Sumo’ on Liberian football. He will be remembered not just for his medical expertise, but for the compassion and dedication he brought to the pitch.
