MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has issued a stern condemnation following a wave of violence that marred Wednesday’s street protests, identifying three prominent figures as “persons of interest” in connection with the unrest.
In an official statement released on December 17, the LNP named Mr. Mulbah Morlu, Mr. Alvin Wesseh, and Archie Pompom, requesting that the trio report to the Central Police Headquarters in Monrovia immediately to assist with ongoing investigations.
A Turn Toward Unrest
While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to assemble peacefully, police authorities expressed disappointment that the day’s events shifted from a lawful demonstration into a scene of intimidation and property destruction.
“Violence, intimidation, and destruction of property are inconsistent with democratic engagement and will not be tolerated,” the LNP stated, noting that the acts “undermined public order and endangered lives.”
Legal Ultimatum
The LNP emphasized that their investigation is evidence-based and impartial. However, the request for the three named individuals to turn themselves in came with a clear warning: failure to comply will lead the police to exercise their statutory authority to effect arrests.
Key highlights of the LNP’s stance:
- Commitment to Rights: The police reiterated their duty to protect democratic freedoms and facilitate lawful protests.
- Law Enforcement Mandate: Actions taken will remain consistent with due process and the laws of the Republic of Liberia.
- Professional Conduct: The LNP assured the public that the investigation is being handled with “restraint, proportionality, and respect for human rights.”
Call for Calm During the Festive Season
As the Christmas season approaches, the LNP is calling on organizers, stakeholders, and the general public to prioritize peace. The police underscored their commitment to maintaining a stable environment for all residents during the holidays.
The LNP concluded by urging all citizens to engage “peacefully and responsibly” as the investigation into the day’s violence continues.
