Monrovia – In complete defiance to Police warning of enforcing the Civil Law Court eviction order, Liberia’s largest opposition political party the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has said it will conduct a mass meeting at its “disputed” headquarters tomorrow, August 23, 2025.
In a press conference at the party’s headquarters, Acting Party Chairman Atty. Augustus Janga Kowo said the party had set aside August 23, 2025 for a mass meeting at the party’s headquarters and has no plan to cancel it.
Atty Kowo said, “The CDC takes note of a press statement emanating from the LNP announcing the plan eviction of the CDC National Headquarters tomorrow, August 23, 2025”, the CDC Acting Chairman told partisans, further propounding that, “a day which was already set aside and announced for a CDC mass meeting of partisans and stakeholders”.
Atty. Kowo told partisans that the announcement was made yesterday, before been made aware through an LNP press statement today that an eviction of the party’s headquarters will be carried out following a civil law court order.
“The CDC reaffirms it commitment to the rule of law but will not be intimidated or harassed by the Government of Liberia through the LNP. The case between the CDC and its landlord is a civil matter that is still going through adjudication at the Liberian judiciary”, the CDC acting Chairman said.
Atty. Kowo furthered that, “Today, August 22, 2025, the CDC team of lawyers perfected appeals in two cases at the civil law court; propounding that, “A bail of exceptions was previously signed by the presiding judge of the civil law court and today appeal bonds were duly prepared and approved by the judge of the civil law court His Honor George W. Smith.”
Atty. Kowo told his partisans that “the bond of these two cases of the CDC have been duly filed at the Supreme Court of the Republic of Liberia.”
“The interstate of Martha Starblefield Bernard was also duly served”, Atty. Kowo said, stressing that, “We do not expect a police eviction of our headquarters tomorrow as this issue remains a civil matter before the courts of Liberia.”
“We encourage partisans to show up tomorrow for the previously scheduled meeting at the national headquarters and we urge you to be very peaceful”, Atty. Kowo said.
The CDC Acting Chairman in a stern warning said, “The CDC remains a peaceful political party that cannot be intimidated by the government’s political interference in the judicial processes of our country.”
Atty. Kowo concluded his message with a strong warning that, “We hold the government fully responsible and accountable for the safety and security of our partisans and all of our assets at this national headquarters that we have accumulated over the last twenty years”, vowing a mass meeting at the CDC disputed headquarters.
What will be the next course of action by Police authorities remains a cause for concern as tension builds around Monrovia over the planned eviction which coincide with the CDC mass meeting tomorrow.
