Monrovia – The son of Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia Willeyon Y. Gbeisay has declined his designation as Associate Magistrate of the Paynesville Magisterial Court.
His resignation comes admit public reactions to his father’s recent comment of his recommendation of his son for said post while in the highest office of the Supreme Court.
In a recent controversial statement, Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay defended his recommendation of his son for the Associate Magistrate post at the Paynesville Magisterial Court with grave disregard for the laws of Liberia which categorically forbids nepotism.
However, following public pressure, Willeyon Gbeisay has tendered in his letter of resignation which has been accepted by President Joseph Boakai.
In a formal communication to the President, Mr. Gbeisay expressed his gratitude for the nomination but tendered his resignation to pursue his legal studies at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law.
He stated that his decision was made in good faith, with the intent to avoid public misconceptions and to ensure that ongoing judicial reforms remain free from unnecessary distractions.
President Boakai acknowledged Mr. Gbeisay’s decision, thanking him for his professionalism and commending his dedication to both personal and professional growth.
Mr. Gbeisay’s recent nomination by the President had sparked public debate with accusations of nepotism surfacing due to his ties to Chief Justice Yamie Gbeisay.
In response to the backlash, Chief Justice Gbeisay defended his son’s nomination stating that President Boakai acted within the bounds of the law by appointing Willeyon Gbeisay as Associate Magistrate-Designate.
