Monrovia – The Managing Director of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation Mohammed Ali has said the loss of the headquarters of opposition political party the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) must “Own up to the party’s own failures!”
The Unity Party (UP) stalwart in the wake of the yesterday’s eviction of the CDC headquarters said,
“The UP did not blame the CDC for our inability to purchase a permanent headquarters during our 12 years in government.” “Our shortcomings were our own”, Mo Ali said.
Likening the loss of the CDC headquarters to that of UP Mo Ali said, “By the end of 2020, it was clear that the McClains were seeking a rent increase that the Unity Party (UP) could not afford, from US$60,000 to US$100,000, while the UP sought a reduction from US$60,000 to US$30,000.”
MD Ali said when it became evident that the parties were at an impasse, and the court ultimately ruled in favor of the McClains, the UP leadership convened and decided to relocate to a new headquarters.
“We moved swiftly, mobilizing resources from partisans, well-wishers, and sympathizers”, he stressed, clarifying that, “Before court sheriffs delivered any eviction order, we had already vacated, thereby avoiding the spectacle of eviction and the public ridicule that often accompanies it—though some still chose to mock.”
According to Mo Ali, the UP did not blame the CDC for its inability to purchase a permanent headquarters during its 12 years in government. “Our shortcomings were our own. By contrast, we understand that CDC’s leadership now suggests the UP bears responsibility for their failure to acquire a property they have occupied for 20 years”, MD Ali alleged.
Mo Ali said, over those two decades, there were multiple “Dollar rallies” at which millions were reportedly collected to buy that same property.
The LWSC MD said CDC supporters deserve clear accounting for how those contributions were used and why the promised purchase did not occur.
“To be clear: CDC’s failures are CDC’s failures. The UP had nothing to do with their eviction. We also understand that the property owner hired the bulldozer to demolish the structures because he did not want them on his land”, said MD Ali.
He called on CDC partisans not to accept excuses in place of accountability, telling them, “Hold your leaders to the commitments made and to the funds you contributed for the purchase of a headquarters.”
He then concluded with a fervent reminder that the UP leadership prioritize acquiring a permanent headquarters of its own— “one we can truly call home”, Mo Ali said.
