Monrovia, Liberia — In a landmark step toward youth empowerment and skills development, several young men and women from Montserrado County District #3 have been awarded full scholarships worth One Million Two Hundred Eighty-Eight Thousand Liberian Dollars (L$1,288,000) to study at the Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC).
The scholarship, fully funded by Representative Sumo Mulbah, is part of his ongoing effort to promote education, reduce youth unemployment, and support technical and vocational training for district residents.
Rep. Mulbah, who has made youth empowerment a cornerstone of his leadership, said the initiative is a response to the growing need for practical skills among young people in Liberia.
“Our country’s development depends on a skilled and empowered youth population,” Rep. Mulbah stated during the official presentation ceremony. “By investing in technical and vocational education, we are not only helping individuals but also building a workforce that can contribute meaningfully to national growth.”
The scholarship covers tuition, training materials, and related academic expenses for dozens of students who will undergo studies in disciplines such as plumbing, auto mechanics, tailoring, electrical installation, masonry, refrigeration, carpentry, and computer technology.
One of the beneficiaries, Prince Konah, expressed deep gratitude to the lawmaker for the life-changing opportunity.
“Rep. Mulbah’s gesture has given me a chance to learn a trade and become self-sufficient. I plan to open my own garage one day and employ others in my community.”
The Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC) remains one of Liberia’s premier institutions for technical and vocational education, offering practical programs that prepare students for immediate employment or entrepreneurship.
Rep. Mulbah disclosed that the L$1.2 million-plus initiative is only the first phase of a broader youth empowerment agenda that includes the establishment of a District Skills Empowerment Fund and support for small business start-up grants for trained graduates.
“We want to go beyond just providing education,” he emphasized. “Our goal is to ensure that after graduation, these young people have the means and support to start their own ventures or secure meaningful jobs.”
The lawmaker reaffirmed that the scholarship program will be an annual initiative, targeting more youth from various communities within District #3 in subsequent cycles.
As the beneficiaries prepare to begin their studies, the gesture stands as a shining example of leadership that transforms lives through action and investment in people.
