MONROVIA – Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence reaffirmed today, January 12, that the Government of China remains fully committed to renovating the Joint Chamber and the historic “Old Building” of the Capitol.
Speaking at the official opening of the 3rd Session of the 55th Legislature, the Pro-Tempore detailed the administrative and technical mandates required to transition the project from a diplomatic commitment to physical construction.
Senator Karnga-Lawrence stated that a multi-committee task force has been activated to ensure the project moves swiftly. The Committee on Foreign Affairs has been tasked to work alongside the Minister of Foreign Affairs to streamline international protocols and expedite the necessary approvals.
“The Senate’s Rules, Order, and Administration (ROA) and Modernization Committees will collaborate directly with their counterparts in the House of Representatives,” the Pro-Tempore noted. These legislative committees will work in tandem with the Ministry of Public Works to finalize a feasibility study for Chinese consideration.
The Pro-Tempore emphasized that the renovation project will be a unified effort across both chambers of the Legislature. “The Speaker and I will be consulted throughout,” Pro-Tempore Karnga-Lawrence affirmed.
During an official visit to China last year, Pro-Tempore Karnga-Lawrence appealed to the Chinese government to assist in restoring the Chambers of the Liberian Legislature, which suffered significant damage from a fire in December 2024.
The renovation is expected to provide a modern, safe environment for legislative activities while preserving the architectural heritage of the Capitol Building.
