Monrovia, Liberia — The Director General of the Liberia Standards Authority (LiSA), Hon. Stephen Y. Mambu, has emphasized the critical role of standards in promoting economic growth, consumer protection, and innovation as Liberia joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Standards Day 2025.
Speaking during the official program held on October 14, Hon. Mambu described World Standards Day as a momentous occasion that underscores the global importance of standardization in ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency in everyday life.
He noted that every year, the international community including governments, industries, and consumer groups comes together to recognize the value of standards in shaping trade, driving innovation, and improving the well-being of societies.
“In Liberia, the role of standards is particularly crucial as we strive for sustainable economic development and social well-being,” Mambu stated. “The Liberia Standards Authority remains dedicated to ensuring that our nation’s products and services meet the necessary quality and safety benchmarks to build consumer trust and strengthen our economy.”
The LiSA Director General highlighted that standards are essential tools for government in fostering national growth and ensuring public safety.
According to him, standards facilitate trade and economic growth by enabling Liberian products to meet international quality requirements, thereby reducing trade barriers and attracting foreign investors.
He added that standards also ensure consumer protection and safety, which he described as a core responsibility of the government. By enforcing quality regulations, the government safeguards citizens from substandard goods and services that pose health or financial risks.
Mambu further noted that standards promote innovation and competitiveness within industries, encouraging companies to adopt best practices and invest in technology, which ultimately enhances productivity and economic resilience.
The speech also focused on the relationship between standards and sustainability. Mambu explained that standards help combat climate change by guiding industries toward environmentally responsible practices, including waste reduction and energy efficiency.
He emphasized that standards play a vital role in public health, ensuring that food, medicine, and healthcare services meet safety and quality benchmarks. Additionally, they foster social equity by ensuring that all segments of society including marginalized populations benefit from quality products and fair access to services.
