Washington DC — Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti today, January 28, 2026, held a productive diplomatic meeting with Mr. Nick Checker, Senior Bureau Chief for African Affairs at the United States Department of State. The meeting took place at the U.S. Department of State in Washington DC.
According to a dispatch from Washington, during the engagement, the two officials discussed a range of strategic priorities aimed at deepening the longstanding partnership between Liberia and the United States.
A central focus of the conversation was the ongoing cooperation between both nations at the United Nations Security Council, where Liberia and the United States continue to work closely on matters of global security, peacekeeping, and strengthening democratic governance across the African continent.
Minister Nyanti praised the United States for its continued support of Liberia’s development trajectory and emphasized Liberia’s commitment to constructive multilateral engagement. Mr. Checker reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to working alongside Liberia through diplomatic collaboration and shared global responsibilities.
The discussions also highlighted pressing issues related to regional infrastructure and development. Both sides expressed a shared interest in expanding investments that enhance transportation networks, energy access, and economic integration across West Africa. Strengthening regional infrastructure, they agreed, is key to promoting stability, trade opportunities, and improved livelihoods throughout the sub‑region.
In addition, the meeting addressed joint efforts to combat illegal immigration into the United States. The Minister and Mr. Checker underscored the importance of coordinated strategies aimed at addressing the root causes of irregular migration, including economic vulnerability, lack of opportunity, and transnational criminal networks. They committed to deepening cooperation on capacity-building, information sharing, and public awareness initiatives designed to safeguard the welfare of migrants while upholding the rule of law.
The Ambassador of Liberia to the US, Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh who accompanied Minister Nyanti welcomed the strategic dialogue. Dr. Conteh described it as another milestone in the enduring relationship between Liberia and the United States.
Also present at the meeting were: William Satrajit Jitsu Sadar, Senior Advisor and Deputy Acting Director, Bureau of African Affairs , William B. Stevens, Deputy Assistant Secretary for West Africa, U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs and Charles Allen, Minister Counselor for Political and Diaspora Affairs at the Embassy of Liberia in Washington D.C.
Both countries reaffirmed their mutual commitment to advancing shared democratic values, regional peace and security, and sustainable development.
