Monrovia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has issued an official proclamation calling the 55th Legislature back from its break for a 10-day Special Session, citing an urgent need to authorize the printing of new currency and pass a supplementary budget.
The directive, dated April 6, 2026, interrupts the lawmakers’ first-quarter recess. The Legislature had adjourned on March 19 and was not scheduled to return until May 8.
Invoking Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, the President informed Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon that the gravity of current national issues requires immediate deliberation. In his letter to the House Speaker, President Boakai mandated session to begin Thursday, April 9, 2026, and conclude on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
The President’s communication outlined a high-stakes agenda focused primarily on Liberia’s fiscal and monetary stability.
The communication proposed for the printing of additional Liberian Dollar banknotes as well as the introduction and passage of the 2026 Supplementary Budget to address “urgent national concern.
The Liberian leader also pointed to other time-sensitive national issues that the Executive deems too critical to wait for the regular session in May.
While referencing “the Interest of the People”, the President’s letter to the Speaker, emphasized that the proposals are time-sensitive and vital to the nation’s economic health.
“It is imperative that the Legislature reconvenes prior to May 8,” the President stated. “These proposals are time-sensitive and cannot await the resumption of the regular session… It is therefore essential that the Legislature convenes promptly to address them in the interest of the nation and its people.”
The 55th Legislature is now expected to gather at Capitol Hill this Thursday, April 9, 2026 to begin the 10-day sprint to address these executive requests.
