Monrovia — The Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched an active investigation and operational efforts to identify and arrest individuals seen in a viral video allegedly participating in the unlawful public assault, harassment, and degrading treatment of a female within the commercial district of Red Light, Paynesville.
In a statement issued on May 8, The LNP said it strongly condemns the incident, which constitutes an act of mob violence and public vigilantism.
“The conduct displayed in the video is unlawful, degrading, and wholly inconsistent with the values of a democratic society governed by the rule of law. The public humiliation and forcible undressing of any person represent serious violations of individual dignity, personal security, and fundamental human rights,” the LNP stated.
The LNP furthered that it maintains a zero tolerance position against mob violence, gender based abuse, public humiliation, and all forms of extrajudicial punishment—emphasizing that no individual or group has the legal authority to subject another person to violence, intimidation, or degrading treatment under any circumstance.
The institution emphasized that allegations of wrongdoing must be addressed exclusively through lawful investigative and judicial processes. Individuals suspected of misconduct are entitled to due process under the laws of the Republic of Liberia, and grievances must be reported to lawful authorities rather than addressed through acts of vigilantism or public abuse.
The Liberia National Police said it is also taking steps to ensure the safety, dignity, and protection of the victim involved, while continuing efforts to identify all persons connected to the incident and bring them before the court in keeping with the law.
The LNP calls on members of the public to cooperate with ongoing investigations by providing any information that may assist law enforcement authorities in identifying those responsible.
Meanwhile, the public is urged to remain calm and to refrain from spreading unverified information, inciting violence, or circulating content that may further violate the dignity of the victim or compromise ongoing investigations.
