Monrovia, Liberia: — The Government of Liberia has named distinguished historian and author Dr. Herbert Brewer as the National Orator for the country’s 179th Independence Anniversary, which will be celebrated in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.
Dr. Brewer is an accomplished Liberian scholar with more than 18 years of academic experience.
Throughout his career, he has served in various capacities—including Director, Associate Professor, and Lecturer—at several universities across Africa and the United States.
This year’s Independence Anniversary will be observed under the theme: “Strengthening National Identity Through Liberian-Led Historical Leadership.”
As National Orator, Dr. Brewer is expected to deliver an address that will inspire reflection on Liberia’s historical journey, celebrate the resilience of the Liberian people, and encourage a renewed commitment to peace, national unity, sustainable development, and collective responsibility.
The announcement was made by Deputy Minister for Public Affairs, Mr. Daniel O. Sando, during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
According to the official calendar of events released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, activities marking the 179th Independence Anniversary will commence on Tuesday, July 21, with the Liberia Technology Summit at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Monrovia.
The celebrations will continue on Wednesday, July 22, with the National Investiture Ceremony, also at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex.
On Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. is expected to dedicate several newly completed government projects, including the Superintendent’s Compound in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.
The following day, Saturday, July 25, will feature an Independence Fish Market Day organized by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), a Presidential Youth Town Hall Meeting organized by the President’s Youth Advisory Council, and a series of sporting activities in Buchanan.
On Sunday, July 26, a National Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Buchanan. The day’s observance will conclude with a carnival-style cultural celebration organized by the Liberia National Tourism Authority.
The official Independence Day celebration will take place on Monday, July 27, beginning with the hoisting of the National Flag and the review of troops by President Boakai, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia. The ceremony will also feature a military and paramilitary parade through the principal streets of Buchanan.
The indoor program commemorating the 179th Independence Anniversary will be held at the Unification Pavilion, followed by the official Independence Day Reception at Buchanan City Hall.
Activities marking the Independence observance will conclude on Tuesday, July 28, with the dedication of the Gbarnga–Salayea Road by President Boakai.
The day’s events will also include a Children’s Socialization Day hosted by the President and the First Lady and organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
