Monrovia, Liberia — Former Minister of Public Works, Ruth Coker Collins, has called on women across Liberia to embrace leadership while building and maintaining strong families. She stressed that success in public life should go hand in hand with stability at home.
Speaking at the Relief Society Anniversary Conference in Monrovia, Collins addressed the theme, “Being a Supportive Wife in Leadership – Leading with Integrity, Vision, and Service.” Drawing from her years in government, she reflected on the realities of balancing national responsibilities with family life.
Collins, who previously served as Minister of Public Works and Rural Development, said leadership is not something that begins in public office, but within the home.
“Leadership does not begin in the office—it begins at home,” she told the audience, emphasizing that integrity must first be practiced in the family before it can be demonstrated in public service.
Sharing her experience as a wife, mother, and public servant, she admitted that managing all three roles is not easy, but it is possible. She encouraged women to remain committed to honesty, respect, and responsibility in their homes as they pursue leadership.
On the issue of vision, Collins urged women to carry their families along in their journey. She noted that success should not create distance, but rather strengthen family bonds.
“You cannot succeed alone—you must carry your family along,” she said.
She also spoke about service, describing it as a responsibility that goes beyond professional duties.
According to her, leadership includes caring for one’s family and creating a supportive environment at home. She encouraged women to rely on practical approaches such as proper time management, setting priorities, open communication, and leaning on trusted support systems.
Reflecting on her time in government, Collins acknowledged that public service often comes with long hours and tough decisions. Even so, she said it is important to remain present and supportive at home whenever possible.
In her closing remarks, she advised women not to neglect their homes in the pursuit of success, while also warning against giving up their ambitions out of fear.
“Balance is not about doing everything perfectly—it is about doing the right thing at the right time,” she said.
The conference brought together women from different backgrounds to reflect on leadership, family, and personal growth, with Collins’ message strongly resonating among participants striving to manage both professional and domestic responsibilities.
