MONROVIA – In a display of raw power and unwavering determination, John Weah, Maryland County’s very own “Gentle Giant,” has officially been crowned the strongest man in Liberia. Weah secured the top spot in the heavyweight category at the 2025 Liberia Strongestman Championship, held at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Gymnasium.
The competition, which drew thousands of fans to witness the ultimate test of physical limit, saw Weah deliver a commanding performance across multiple disciplines. His victory marks a significant shift in the landscape of Liberian strength athletics, as he out powered some of the sport’s most vocal and established figures.
The battle for the title was a narrow one, characterized by intense rivalries that had simmered on social media for months leading up to the event.
First Place: John Weah (“Gentle Giant”)
Second Place: Thomas Benjamin (“No Fear”)
Third Place: Yusuf Kromah (“Lib Hulk”)
Thomas Benjamin, popularly known as “No Fear,” fought valiantly to retain his title but ultimately finished second. Meanwhile, Nimba County’s “Lib Hulk” (Yusuf Kromah) rounded out the top three with a consistent showing that kept him in contention until the final event.
Fans and analysts however, do not consider the win by Gentle Giant as perhaps the biggest shock of the night, but the performance of Prince Kaydee, known as “Sarpo the Giant.” Entering the competition as a pre-event favorite and a central figure in the pre-match “001” title debate, Kaydee failed to break into the top three. Despite his massive frame and previous accolades, the Sinoe County strongman struggled to match the pace and precision of the podium finishers.
This year’s championship followed a period of heightened scrutiny for the Liberia Strongman Federation (LSF). Ahead of the finals, several athletes, including “No Fear” and “Sarpo the Giant,” were required to issue formal apologies for conduct violations during federation meetings.
The LSF President, Emmanuel Payne, noted that the event was a success not just in terms of athleticism, but in restoring the values of camaraderie and discipline to the sport. With John Weah now holding the crown, the “Gentle Giant” begins his reign as the undisputed face of Liberian strength.
