Monrovia, Liberia: — The Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Governance Commission (GC) on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 concluded a strategic meeting to officially coordinate the nationwide reintroduction of Civic Education in Liberian schools.
The collaborative session which was held at the Ministry of Education at the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, aimed to solidify institutional partnership, identify crucial implementation gaps, and form a joint technical working group to oversee a nationwide rollout.
In his official welcome remarks and opening statement, Assistant Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Abba G. Karnga Jr., revealed that the Ministry has already begun exploring a pilot implementation phase using existing Civic Education textbooks in selected schools. He noted that the commission’s institutional backing arrives at a vital moment to reinforce and strengthen the initiative. According to Hon. Karnga, the creation of a joint technical working team is essential to define an operational roadmap, assess curriculum deficiencies, and properly manage stakeholders as the subject transitions back into the core academic structure.
Speaking on behalf of the Governance Commission, the oversight commissioner for Civic Education, National Identity and Visioning Mandate Area, Hon. Cytirus K. Kerbay reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to the project, emphasizing the importance of the joint technical team.
She meanwhile indicated that the team would be tasked with the responsibility to build an actionable framework, noting that the framework should define institutional roles, and set practical implementation timeline.
Commissioner Kerbay further stated that senior leadership from both MOE and the Governance Commission will jointly carryout periodic supervision and review progress updates submitted by the technical working team.
The reintroduction of Civics to the classroom in Liberia will require a more coordinated and synchronized approach.
