MONROVIA – Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh has warned the ruling Unity Party (UP) and the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), urging them to stop treating Liberia’s illegal drug crisis as a political football game for the 2029 elections.
In a strongly worded statement via his official Facebook handle, Sen. Konneh declared that the illegal drug trade is a national emergency and a “matter of life and death” for the nation’s youth, warning that partisan bickering only benefits powerful drug syndicates.
In his statement, Senator Konneh warned that dismissing major drug busts as “selective justice” or “cover-ups” severely damages public confidence in law enforcement and the judiciary. He emphasized that foreign traffickers are currently smuggling narcotics into Liberia under the direct protection and collusion of powerful local interests. While acknowledging the recent efforts of joint security forces, the lawmaker demanded a transparent investigation to uncover exactly how nearly half a billion dollars worth of cocaine breached the country’s borders and to expose the insiders who facilitated its entry.
“Drug cartels don’t care about party lines,” Konneh warned. “If the UP and CDC keep treating the drug war as just another political battleground… the syndicates will come out on top, our communities will suffer, and justice will be the real loser.”
Konneh concluded by calling for bipartisan unity and true patriotism to protect the country’s security, stating that the focus must shift away from trading political accusations and toward dismantling the networks enabling the flow of narcotics into Liberia.
The lawmaker statement comes on the heels of a major joint security statement on Wednesday , July 22, 2026, following another massive drug bust of about US$317.6 million in Duazon—believed to be the largest in the country’s history.
