Monrovia — Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has strongly rejected allegations linking him to an individual reportedly connected to drug-related activities.
The denial comes in response to comments made by prominent Liberian journalist Rodney Sieh during his appearance on Spoon TV’s flagship program “One on one with the CEO” on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Sieh alleged that Vice President Koung shared an association with a man named Anthony, pointing to a group photograph featuring both men as evidence.
In an official statement released via his official Facebook handle, Vice President Koung clarified that the existence of the photograph does not imply a personal relationship or any knowledge of the individual’s private affairs.
“As Vice President, I do take photos with many individuals at public and private events,” Koung stated. “I do not know Anthony, and the photo taken does not suggest my knowledge of any personal dealings he may be involved with.”
Reaffirming a Zero-Tolerance Stance on Drugs
The Vice President used the opportunity to reiterate his strict stance against the trafficking and use of illicit substances in Liberia. He recalled a previous high-profile incident from late last year to emphasize that no one in his circle is above the law.
“As I stated when Clifford Payne, an official of the Group of 77, was arrested on November 24, 2025, in connection with allegations arising from a suspected drug case, I still maintain that if my wife, children, relatives, friends, political associates, and employees are connected to any drug-related activities, they should face the full weight of the law,” Koung affirmed.
The fight against narcotics remains a highly sensitive and scrutinized political issue in the country. By issuing a swift rebuttal, the Vice President’s office aims to distance the administration from the allegations and reassure the public of its commitment to impartial justice regarding drug enforcement.
Currently, the debate surrounding the US$19.2 million cocaine which was seized at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) on June 8, 2026, has placed severe pressure on the government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai with many critics alleging that closed associates of the President and Vice President are involved with the case.
Though the Liberia National Police has already announced charges against several individuals but the matter still remain a public debate.
