Margibi County — In a major step toward expanding power access across Margibi County, Senator Nathaniel F. McGill announced that discussions are underway between the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and the management of Firestone Liberia to electrify various company divisions.
Senator McGill disclosed the initiative following high-level engagements with leadership from both entities over the past few days. The collaborative effort aims to connect residents living across Firestone’s agricultural concessions directly to the national power grid or joint utility infrastructure.
“I had the privilege over the last few days of speaking with the Managing Director of LEC and the management of Firestone about providing electricity to various divisions of Firestone,” Senator McGill stated. “I want to thank both management teams for their willingness to work together to provide electricity to our people.”
For decades, many operational divisions within the vast Firestone rubber plantation have faced limited or localized power supply, impacting daily life, local commerce, and basic public services. The proposed partnership between the state-owned power utility and the private concessionaire marks a strategic shift toward shared infrastructure to address long-standing energy deficits in the region.
Sen. McGill emphasized that his office will maintain an active supervisory role to ensure the project moves from initial discussions to full implementation.
“My office will work closely with both management teams to achieve this important goal for our people,” the lawmaker added.
Further details regarding the timeline, technical assessments, and specific divisions targeted in the initial phase are expected to be announced as joint technical teams finalize plans.
